Hydra, how to enjoy as a tourist

Built in the shape of an amphitheatre, Hydra is a popular tourist destination in Greece and not without good reason. There are a host of activities to enjoy while you stay at Hydra right from the expansive beaches to the museums and you can also enjoy a quiet time at a yacht. The place also has affordable hotels where you can enjoy your stay. Some tourists try and cover Hydra in a day but that’s doing injustice to the island as there are so many tourist sports worth considering.

Museums

The place has many museums where you can enjoy and learn about the rich culture of the region. Hydra was once a centre of major commercial activity and the booming business meant that it housed a large population. Some popular museums include the Historical Archive museum which displays material from the 18th century onwards. The Byzantine museum is another popular spot and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. National Historical Museum and the Art and History museum are other popular museums that are worth a visit whenever you decide to visit Hydra next.

Beaches

The place is well known for its beaches where you can easily sunbathe and tan your skin or swim in rich waters to relax. Mandraki beach is the most famous and offers a lot of water sports. If you are in the mood for some diving and snorkelling, then Bisti will never disappoint you. Hydroneta and Spilia are ideal for sunbath and some such as the Ayios Nikolaos are accessible only through boats. The bulk of the harbour side is lined with jewellery shops where you can enjoy a nice shopping experience.

A visit to Hydra is just incomplete without making time for this architectural delight. It is famous for its bell tower and is easy to locate. The church also houses a museum and the church also has a coin collection worth looking at. The timings are not strictly adhered so it’s best to inquire before you plan your visit.

Food and Drink

Greece is well known for its rich cuisines and you can sample some of the best dishes in Hydra. Pirate bar is a very popular tourist spot and operates as a café during day time. There are many good spots located outside and on the many beaches too. You can either enjoy a quiet cup of coffee and some snacks or enjoy liquor at night. Psaropoula is another good restaurant that is located on the beach and offers very good seafood. If you are looking for some traditional Greek food, then Pirofani will be the best place for it.

Hydra has a number of good hotels and some of the most popular ones include Nereids Guest house and Botsis guest house. If you are a beach lover, then ensure you book one that is in close proximity to the harbour. Hydra is not really over crowded but is always full of tourists so it’s probably best to book in advance.
